Unique Paradise For Birders

Costa Rica has more than 850 bird species, which equals about ten percent of the world’s known total, and twice as many species as in the United States and Canada combined. The national bird, the Clay-Brown Robin, doesn’t stand out for its simple color and plumage, but it does for its beautiful songs.

In Costa Rica there are many beautiful and exotically plumed species of birds. Among them are Tanagers, Manakins, and Trogons that inhabit the tropical forests of varied regions of the country.

Amid the wetland areas of Costa Rica, waders such as Egrets, Ibis, and Spoonbills are easily seen, while vultures (four species), and raptors (about fifty species) including owls, the Osprey, the Laughing Falcon are commonly sighted soaring overhead or squatting atop trees and poles. One magestic bird that is endangered is a massive bird of prey, the Harpy Eagle. Now very rare, the Harpy Eagle maybe be perhaps seen by the Osa Peninsula or in the southern mountain range of Talamanca.

Migratory birds flock to Costa Rica’s wetlands, especially toward the end of December through April ‘s dry season. Blue Winged Teal, Muscovy Ducks, Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks, and other winter migrants arrive in their tens of thousands.

Costa Rica’s shores are crowded with seabirds such as Oystercatchers, Spotted Sandpipers, and Whimbrels scurry around at the water’s edge. Coastal mangroves are home to Blue Herons and Neotropic Cormorants, while several offshore islands are important nesting sites for Boobies, Laughing Gulls, and Storm Petrels.

Other beautiful birds Costa Rica has to offer include: six types of toucans, the Resplendent Quetzal, parrots, macaws (green and scarlet), and fifty-seven species of hummingbirds just to mention a few others. Costa Rica is truly a bird watcher’s paradise.
